SUMMARY:St. Vincent
DESCRIPTION:It starts with the creation myth: St. Vincent\, naked and alone in the wilderness\, startled as the ominous rattle of a snake breaks the silence of her Eden. She realizes she’s not alone in the world and breaks into a run\, headed towards the uncertainty of the future. It’s a lovely and appropriate metaphor to open St. Vincent’s self-titled fourth album\, except that it literally happened. \n“It’s not a metaphor at all\,” St. Vincent\, aka Annie Clark\, says of the album’s lead track\, “Rattlesnake.” While visiting a friend’s west Texas ranch\, she decided to strip away her clothes and fully enjoy the solitude that city life so rarely affords. “I went walking around this great expanse of land. There was no one around so I decided to take my clothes off and immerse myself in nature. I saw holes in the path\, but did not put two-and-two together until I heard the rattle and caught a glimpse of the snake.” \nClark’s been moving at a breakneck speed for the past four years\, barely stopping to catch her breath amidst a whirlwind of recording and touring. In 2011 she released her third album\, Strange Mercy\, called “one of the year’s best” by the New York Times and “something to behold” by Pitchfork. The record cemented her status as one of her generation’s most fearsome and inventive guitarists\, earned her the covers of SPIN\, Paper\, and Under the Radar\, performances everywhere from the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Fallon to Letterman and Conan\, and a year-long sold-out tour of her biggest venues to date around the world. She appeared on the hit IFC series Portlandia and graced the pages of Vogue’s coveted September issue. It was during this already monumentally busy time that she completed work with David Byrne on their collaborative album Love This Giant\, another critical smash that was dubbed “marvelous” by the New Yorker and “magical” by NPR. \n“I finished the Strange Mercy tour in Japan and went directly into ‘Love This Giant’ rehearsals and the subsequent North American tour\,” says Clark. \nAt the end of it all\, Clark made it clear to everyone in her life\, in no uncertain terms\, that she needed two weeks to decompress and readjust to life off the road. Time without interruption\, without thoughts of albums or tours or festivals or studios. “36 hours later I sent everyone an email saying\, ‘I’m ready to go again\,’” Clark laughs. “I began writing music.” \nThose songs turned into her most lyrically sophisticated and musically diverse collection to date\, meshing distorted\, aggressive electric guitars and bold vocal and synthesizer arrangements on top of a relentless rhythm section. \n“I wanted the groove to be paramount\,” Clark says of the album\, which she arranged and demoed extensively in Austin before heading into the studio in Dallas to record. She enlisted Dap-Kings drummer Homer Steinweiss and frequent collaborator McKenzie Smith of Midlake to share drum duties\, while she returned to producer John Congleton to take the sonic potential they’d only just begun to tap with Strange Mercy into dramatic new territory. “I wanted to make a party record you could play at a funeral.” \nThe result is Clark’s most gripping work to date. “Bring Me Your Loves” is a frenzied freakout\, but even less frantic tracks like “Severed Crossed Fingers” still deliver her trademark blend of the beautiful and surreal. At the heart of all her music\, though\, lie larger questions about what it means to be human and the ways in which we seek to create meaning in our lives. \n“Regret” catches her at a moment of immense vulnerability\, while “I Prefer Your Love” may be the purest expression of affection she’s ever written. “Digital Witness” tackles identity in the era of Instagram\, with Clark singing\, “If I can’t show it / If you can’t see me / What’s the point of doing anything” \n“We are inundated with technology that makes us perpetual spectators\,” says Clark. “It’s not enough to just experience life\, we have to document it and show it to other people in order to validate our existence.” Clark is quick to admit that she\, too\, at times falls victim to the impulse\, which is part of what fascinates her so much with the idea. “Lyrically\, I’m always so interested in how complicated people are and the notion of true ambivalence\,” she says. “Literally\, ambi-valence. Two ways at the same time.” \nSuch is the music on St. Vincent: charming and alarming\, gorgeous and morbid\, comforting and uncanny. Four albums into one of music’s most compelling careers\, Annie Clark is as “ambi-valent” as ever\, and she’s not slowing down any time soon. \nCatch St. Vincent performing on August 27th at the Twilight Concert Series with Special Guest TBA. \nBio Provided by: Twilight Concert Series

SUMMARY:Flying Lotus
DESCRIPTION:  \nExperimental electronic music producer Flying Lotus\, born Steven Ellison\, is a grandson of songwriter Marilyn McLeod(the co-writer of Diana Ross‘ “Love Hangover”)\, as well as a great-nephew of pianist Alice Coltrane\, and therefore a cousin of saxophonist Ravi Coltrane. Ellison made beats for the Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim network before releasing his debut full-length\, 1983\, which resembled the work of fellow avant-garde hip-hop producers Madlib\, J Dilla\, and Ammoncontact on Plug Research in 2006. Following the six-song EP Reset\, he released his second full-length\, Los Angeles\, on Warp in 2008. A three-part series of satellite EPs consisting of remixes and additional productions trailed through the next year. Cosmogramma\, his third and most complex album\, was issued on the same label in 2010\, while the relatively pared-down Until the Quiet Comes followed in 2012. The suite-like You’re Dead!\, on which he was joined by Herbie Hancock\, Kendrick Lamar\, and Snoop Dogg\, and Captain Murphy (Ellison‘s rapping alias)\, among others\, came two years later. Ellison‘s considerable quantity of additional production and remix work is scattered across dozens of releases on revered labels such as Tectonic\, Hyperdub\, Ghostly International\, and Ninja Tune — the last of which is the distributor of his Brainfeeder label\, home to releases by the likes of the Gaslamp Killer\, Austin Peralta\, Martyn\, frequent collaborator Thundercat\, and Taylor McFerrin. \nBio provided by:All Music

SUMMARY:The Word
DESCRIPTION:The genesis of THE WORD began in 1998\, when the Avant-jazz and funk group Medeski\, Martin & Wood took the burgeoning North Mississippi Allstars on their first tour. Riding down the road\, the groups listened to the first two Arhoolie Records compilations of sacred steel guitar\, a musical style then just seeping into the broader public awareness. Sacred steel is ecstatic pedal steel guitar used in sanctified churches; it’s the same instrument familiar to country & western music\, but played with the authority and scale of a church organ. Keyboardist John Medeski and Luther Dickinson cooked up the idea of recording an instrumental gospel album with the Allstars (Luther Dickinson—guitars; Cody Dickinson—drums; Chris Chew—bass) in Medeski’s Brooklyn studio. When they learned that a young sacred steel star named Robert Randolph lived in New Jersey\, they invited him to their area gig. This was THE WORD’S big bang. \nTHE WORD plays the hymnal of the electric improvisational church. They don’t struggle with arrangements\, and they leave room for each other to stretch out. They toured together after their 2001 debut\, and have reunited occasionally\, including Bonnaroo in 2005 and 2012 and the Jam Cruise in 2010. One big difference between the first album and the new album\, Soul Food (out May 5th on Vanguard) is how much more knowledge each has accumulated. “For the first Word record\, I was new to playing outside the church\,” says Robert. “I know a lot more now.” John says\, “We have more experiences\, more music. We’re all just better players.” \nFourteen years may have passed between albums for THE WORD\, but that’s no suggestion of broken bonds. Nor of broken strings. A love of music\, of extended improvisational collaboration\, of closing the eyes and channeling the feel—these are the ties that bind THE WORD. \nThe Word will play August 13th with Lee Fields & The Expressions supporting. \n— Robert Gordon\, author of Respect Yourself: Stax Records and the Soul Explosion \n  \n  \nBio provided by: Twilight Concert Series

SUMMARY:Lee Fields and The Expressions
DESCRIPTION:There aren’t too many artists making soul music today who had a release in 1969\, back when R&B was first beginning to give the drummer some. Lee Fields\, however\, is one such artist—or maybe he’s better labeled a phenomenon. Since the late sixties\, the North Carolina native has amassed a prolific catalog of albums and has toured and played with such legends as Kool and the Gang\, Sammy Gordon and the Hip-Huggers\, O.V Wright\, Darrell Banks\, and Little Royal. With a career spanning 43 years\, releases on twelve different record labels\, and having toured the world over with his raucous-yet-tender voice\, it’s mind-blowing that the music he’s making today with Brooklyn’s own Truth & Soul Records is the best of his career. \nWith a catalogue that ranges from James Brown-style funk to lo-fi blues to contemporary Southern soul to collaborations with French house DJ/producer Martin Solveig\, Lee Fields has done it all. Today\, with The Expressions—Truth & Soul’s house band\, Lee Fields continues to evolve\, enmeshed into the group’s sweeping\, string-laden\, cinematic soul sound. Their latest full-length\, Emma Jean\, released in June 2014 on Truth & Soul\, takes soul music in a familiar but updated direction with the matchless pairing of Fields’ warm-and-raw growl and The Expressions’ switched-on and sharp musicianship. \n“In a curious case of musical evolution\, the older Fields becomes\, the closer he gets to perfecting the sound of soul that he grew up with as a young man\, ” so said music writer\, scholar\, and DJ Oliver Wang about Fields in a piece for NPR in July 2009. The latest LP from Lee Fields and The Expressions is the next step towards this perfection. A step that may find Fields\, The Expressions\, and Truth & Soul as a label\, finally being bestowed the contemporary soul music crown. \nLee Fields & The Expressions will be playing August 13th with The Word. \nBio Provided by: Twilight Concert Series

SUMMARY:Mets
DESCRIPTION:“I look at it like this\,” METZ frontman Alex Edkins says. “You start a band\, just as something to do\, because music’s what makes you tick\, the thing you dream about and think about and that’s it. You never think that you’ll be able to do it all the time. But then\, for some inexplicable reason\, people actually listen and latch on and the band begins to take on new meaning. All of a sudden there are expectations and pressure\, real or imagined\, to change who you are. It was important to us\, when making this record\, not to give in to that pressure.” \nWhat happens when a seemingly irresistible force meets an immovable object is a serviceable metaphor for the music METZ creates\, both live and on record. Now behold II\, the concussive new full-length from what is arguably North America’s finest touring rock band. Written and recorded in 2014\, after two years of constant touring behind their rightly adored self-titled debut\, II is METZ at their most true to form—as pure an expression of what they do as can currently be committed to tape. The guitars are titanic\, the drums ill-tempered\, the vocals chilling\, and the volume worrisome. Though they incorporated new instruments\, (baritone guitar\, tape loops\, piano\, synth\, found sounds) and stretched out the arrangements\, they still managed to “stay true to what made us tick in the first place: that immediacy\,” Edkins calls it. “If it punches you in the gut.” \nCatch METZ in support of The Kills on August 6th. \n  \nBio Provided by: Twilight Concert Series

SUMMARY:The Kills
DESCRIPTION:Following a year of worldwide festivals and select shows supporting Queens of The Stone Age\, Jack White\, The Black Keys and Arctic Monkeys\, The Kills will return to North America for a run of summer festivals and low key headline shows. \nThe Kills most recent album Blood Pressures\, was released in 2011 on Domino Records. The album saw Jamie Hince and Alison Mosshart deliver their vivid and uniquely gritty post-blues\, but with a new level of thoughtfulness and depth not yet explored by the duo. Tinged with wistfulness and vulnerability\, Blood Pressures has an enduring sense of intricacy and richness that intensely blends with their ever-compelling songwriting. \nThe band has been busy in 2014 exploring their other passion- visual arts. In June\, Jamie opened “Echo Home”\, an exhibit of his photographic work at the Morrison Hotel Gallery in New York. PRESS HERE to his see some of his images featured on Du Jour.  Several of Alison’s original paintings on paper\, canvas and fabric art were included in “Push It\,” a 21-person group show devoted to female artists at ArtNowNY in April. PRESS HERE to learn more about the exhibit and see some of the paintings featured in the New York Times T Magazine. \nThe Kills are currently in the studio working on their fifth album – watch this space for more. \nThe Kills will perform August 6th with METZ supporting. SUMMARY:PRhyme With Adrian Younge
DESCRIPTION:The burgeoning collaboration between legendary East Coast producer DJ Premier and veteran Detroit-bred emcee Royce da 5’9” – PRhyme – resonates as both a head-nodding call to classic hip hop action as well as a raw response to the short attention span hip-pop audiences of today. \n“Right now\, everybody seems like they are programmed to listen to singles and gravitate towards the popular songs\,” Royce da 5’9” explains the thinking that led to PRhyme. “Our thing is to teach people how to not skim through the albums because their attention span is short. I want people to appreciate the fact that we didn’t compromise in lieu of the environment. In order to try to change the way that people digest music\, we had to take a leap of faith.” \nPRhyme’s self-titled late 2014 release effortlessly blends Premier’s seminal beats and production – built entirely from the original music of multi-instrumentalist\, composer and producer Adrian Younge – with Royce’s passionate\, noticeably matured style and substance to create an album both old and new\, maybe even timeless. Just like a true hip- hop album should sound.\n“It’s not\, like\, five different producers with five different scattered sounds; it’s one cohesive sound\, and it’s raw hip-hop — beats\, rhymes and scratches\, content and lyrics\,” Royce told Billboard. “That’s the foundation of hip-hop. I can’t wait to see how much more we do and how much further we go with it.” \nPRhyme with Adrian Younge will perform on July 30th with Bishop Nehru supporting. SUMMARY:Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
DESCRIPTION:For more than 15 years\, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club has carried the torch for true rock and roll. From the guitar-heavy sonic aggression of the earlier BRMC years\, to the blues-Americana stylings of studio releases like Howl (2005) and Baby 81 (2007) to the present\, guitarist Peter Hayes\, bassist Robert Levon Been and drummer Leah Shapiro\, are unabashed in creating their own unflinching\, true rock and roll sound. \nThe most recent release by this firebrand rock troupe sees them at their most dynamic. Their 2013 album\, Specter at the Feast\, ventures into diverse sonic territory delivering their most ambitious offering yet. It’s an album of impossible dichotomies; opposing sounds amalgamate into a seamless\, entirely coherent package that rumbles with driving rhythms and soars with skyward-arcing guitar howls. \nBRMC are set to release a three disc album and DVD – Live in Paris – featuring footage and recordings from a stop at the Theatre Trianon during their sold out 2014 European tour. \nCatch Black Rebel Motorcycle Club co-headlining the July 23rd Twilight Concert Series performance with Father John Misty. \nBio Provided by: Twilight Concert Series

SUMMARY:Father John Misty
DESCRIPTION:“I Love You\, Honeybear” was recorded intermittently from 2013 to 2014 in Echo Park\, Los Angeles and produced with Jonathan Wilson\, who I also recorded and produced 2012’s Fairly Fun with. \nThere’s a case to be made that it sounds and acts a bit like Scott Walker\, Randy Newman\, Harry Nilsson\, and Dory Previn. Blammo. \nThe songs are a narration of my experience falling in love\, which means different things to different people\, but which I found incredibly inspiring\, personally and creatively. My personal mandate for the writing herein was to claim the experience for myself without resorting to a multitude of clichés. I believe I have addressed the sensuality of fear\, the terrifying force of love\, the unutterable pleasures of true intimacy\, and the destruction of emotional and intellectual prisons with an imprint that is undeniably my own. Blammo. \nThis is a fairly experimental record\, in that\, I “experimented” with several different approaches for each song (which is part of why it took so long to record) even though the arrangements and styling are fairly classic. Taking a larger producer role this time around gave me license to indulge no small degree of ambivalence and uncertainty. This material demanded from me a new way of being made\, and it took a lot of time before that revealed itself. I believe we found a way to make something that is meticulous but natural\, dense but still sounds spacious. Mostly I had to overcome the temptation to think that the method by which the last record was made would suffice this time around too. \nBlammo. \n— Father John Misty \nCatch Father John Misty co-headlining the July 23rd Twilight Concert Series performance with Black Rebel Motorcycle Club \n  \nBio Provided By: Twilight Concert Series

SUMMARY:Death Cab For Cutie
DESCRIPTION:Death Cab for Cutie knew immediately that Kintsugi would fit perfectly as the title of their eighth studio album. A philosophy derived from the Japanese art of repairing cracked ceramics with gold to highlight flaws instead of hiding them\, kintsugi speaks to the way an object’s history is part of its aesthetic value. “Considering what we were going through internally\, and with what a lot of the lyrics are about\, it had a great deal of resonance for us — the idea of figuring out how to repair breaks and make them a thing of beauty\,” says bassist Nick Harmer\, who suggested the name to singer-guitarist Ben Gibbard and drummer Jason McGerr. “Philosophically\, spiritually\, emotionally\, it seems perfect for this group of songs.” \nKintsugi is the band’s first time recording with a producer other than their own Chris Walla\, the guitarist and multi-instrumentalist whose talents behind the board had helped shape Death Cab’s sound since Gibbard released the You Can Play These Songs With Chords cassette in 1997. For Kintsugi\, they worked with Rich Costey (whose production credits include albums by Franz Ferdinand\, Muse\, and Interpol)\, recording at his Los Angeles studio Eldorado over the course of twelve weeks in the first half of 2014. “He was all in in a way that I don’t think a lot of producers are nowadays\,” says Gibbard. “We couldn’t have landed on a better collaborator for this record. He accomplished what we’ve always attempted\, which is to make Death Cab sound on a record how we sound live. And we’re a rock band live. The difficulty now for the live show is making them rock as hard as they rock on the record. That’s a new quagmire for this band.” \nDeath Cab For Cutie will play July 16th with tUnE-yArDssupporting. \nBio Provided By: Twilight Concert Series

SUMMARY:Tune-Yards
DESCRIPTION:Merrill Garbus has performed as tUnE-yArDs since 2009\, and that band name has always been synonymous with forward movement—whether because of her explosive performance style or the always-surprising way in which her songs unfold. First gaining notice with the debut BiRd-BrAiNs\, which The New York Times called “a confident do-it-yourselfer’s opening salvo: a staticky\, low-fi\, abrasive attention-getter\,” Garbus forged a reputation as a formidable live presence through relentless touring. In 2011\, tUnE-yArDs released its second album\, w h o k i l l\, a startling and sonically adventurous statement that led to a whirlwind period where Garbus and bassist Nate Brenner accrued accolades from critics (including the #1 spot on the Village Voice’s 2011 Pazz and Jop poll)\, performed in front of increasing numbers of rapturous crowds around the world\, and collaborated with the likes of Yoko Ono and ?uestlove. It was a thrilling ride\, but it was one that needed a little bit of recovery afterward. \n“I took the Fall [of 2012] off and started taking both Haitian dance and drum lessons\,” says Garbus of the post-w h o k i l l period. “It was nice; I was trying to be healthy and have a good time. And then\, in January [2013]\, I was like\, ‘I have nothing.’ I’ve never had nothing before—I’ve always had some songs that I’m planning on recording; I’ve always been working live with the looping pedal and writing that way. And I thought\, ‘OK\, if I’m going to grow as an artist\, I need to do this differently.’ \n“So I went to my studio five days a week and told myself I would be doing two demos a day. I also had rules: ‘This week I’m only going to write using drum machines’; ‘This week I’m going to write using vocal melodies first\, and build something around that.’ At the end of that\, I had about 30 demos.” \nThose demos would eventually gel into Nikki Nack\, the stunning third album by the Oakland-based band. A complex\, textured statement that opens with a clarion call to ‘Find A New Way’ and spends its 13 tracks getting there\, it’s a showcase of how Garbus’s songwriting has blossomed\, and a testament to how current technologies can combine with themes from the past—Saturday mornings spent watching Pee-Wee’s Playhouse\, puppet shows based on Jonathan Swift’s A Modest Proposal\, hard days made less so by the refuge provided by top-40 radio—to create something utterly original. \ntUnE-yArDs will be playing July 16th with Death Cab For Cutie. \n  \nBio provided by: Twilight Concert Series
