Homemade Vanilla Extract

Making your own vanilla extract could not be easier. If you’re like me, you go thought vanilla like water. And making your own extract only requires two ingredients, some time, and patience.

First you will need some quality vanilla beans. You can find these at specialty stores like Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods, but I like to order the Premium Madagascar Beans direct from Beanilla. Use a knife to split the vanilla bean in half, leaving about ½ inch at each end intact.

Next you will need a bottle of Vodka. Put the vanilla beans in a glass bottle or jar and cover with the vodka. The mixture needs to sit for at least six weeks to be infused, but is even better if you wait a bit longer… even a few months. The smell of fresh vanilla extract will delight and intoxicate your home.

When you’re ready to use the extract, strain it through cheesecloth and fill clean bottles Drop a couple of vanilla bean into a bottle to keep the infusion going, and use for yourself or give as a gift.
